Monsoons, floods, fire and famine... how they affect the animals

No dog training secrets today... but please spare a thought for all those innocent animals: wild animals, pets, and farm livestock... who are undergoing dreadful conditions.

What with monsoons in India, floods in the UK, fires in Greece, and famine in Zimbabwe... there have been a great deal of 'natural disasters' for animals to suffer in recent months.

Click Here for more details on the following topics...

"Have you ever wondered how wild animals fare during floods? Our team in India found out following torrential monsoon rains in India. HSI India and the Animal Help Foundation are in the field rescuing wildlife and educating people about how we can help our wild neighbors in times of need.

With little food available and thousands of people leaving the country every day, the animals of Zimbabwe are finding themselves in dire straits. HSI is working with local and national groups to ensure pets, farm animals and wild animals are safe and cared for."

The items above are quotes from the HSI newsletter... if you Click this link you can find out about this, and other work undertaken on behalf of animals worldwide.

Toys and Treats bargains NOW

Toys for your pet... now is a great time to stock up on toys and treats for your pet as there is a Sale at Dog Supplies USA and also a Clearance at Petplanet

At Dog Supplies you can find out what the most popular toys are, you can also check the rating of the various toys which are available. Items can get up to a 5 star rating, a useful facility to check. Amongst the most popular are Kong Toys, Balls, and Rope Toys. Remember, with balls, to get a ball which is big enough for your pet - don't get a too small one, which could, potentially, get stuck in his or her throat.

At Petplanet you will find plenty of toys for both dogs and cats [and other pets too] - Rubber Chew Toys and Throw Toys prove very popular, as are treats, in the form of favourite foods!

PLEASE NOTE:---
There is a full review of both stores within our Flyball Dogs blog - dated March 13th, 2007 - please see link in the left-hand margin, then go to Archives - Oldest Archives.

Safety FIRST

Just a caution... if you are in a place which is strange to your dog, don't let it off it's lead - should it catch the scent of something interesting, it may be off after it immediately and there could be dangers in many forms lurking around the corner!

I know your dog is well trained, but there is always the odd occasion when something so tempting happens that it can't resist.

Guide Dogs ... auction in Bolton, UK

The quoted item below is part of a request for help I received...

"Pemberton taxi's in Wigan are having a grand auction night in aid of guide dogs for the blind.

They are hoping to raise five thousand pounds to sponser a guide dog.

The event is being held at the Douglas Bank Pub, Wigan on August 24th.

The event has been registered with the local Guide Dog branch located in Bolton. You can verify this on Bolton 01204 546510 ... if you could offer any help we would be grateful."

Cruelty at Puppy Mills in the USA

The following is a quote from a newsletter from the Humane Society of the United States...

'Soon after "Baby" arrived at a puppy mill, her vocal cords were cut with scissors, without any anesthetic, so she couldn't bark. The puppy mill owner didn't want to be disturbed. Then, she was confined in a cramped cage with a chicken wire floor, so the owner did not have to clean it. Later, she broke her leg, and it was left untreated for years. Ultimately, the leg had to be amputated...'

Further quote from newsletter follows...

'Puppy mills operate largely out of sight and mind, even for many who care deeply about animals. The Humane Society of the United States is working hard to change that.'

A breed apart?

Have you ever noticed how well dogs of the same breed get on together?

The Rhodesian Ridgeback Welfare Trust barbeque last Sunday was held in a playing field adjoining the village hall at Chieveley. With a bigger than normal turnout, and a beautiful sunny day - just right, not too hot - great fun was had by all.

And with literally dozens of dogs running free and interacting well together, from pups to elderly dogs - it is amazing that there were no 'fall outs', just the very odd small disagreement.

And as soon as they established who was boss - everything was fine - peace reigned again.

Problems?

Is there anyone out there who is suffering problems with an older dog?

Has your pet taken to stealing food, eating unmentionables, or eating grass and other vegetation or berries when out?

The answer could be that their diet is lacking in an essential nutrient. This is even possible for dogs on 'complete' dry food diets - and the problem will build up over the years.

A good addition, which you can obtain from a pet shop or our on-line suppliers, will be seaweed powder or granules - it contains many special nutrients and minerals and can appear to be a miracle cure!
