Correct attitude for training

The vital importance of understanding the doggy mind cannot be over-emphasised! Not understanding will lead to incorrect, unnecessary, and totally ineffective training methods. The ability of the owner is in question here... not the ability of the dog to understand. You, the owner, must know HOW to train, WHEN to train, and WHICH WAY to train.

You MUST be consistent, and you MUST train with kindness. The training MUST be pleasurable for your dog.

If you do not feel that you have ALL the knowledge to train a new dog properly [and even if you do, after all new and enlightened methods are often appearing] then get hold of some books, courses, and videos on the right way to train... also consider a residential course.

I will be including links to various Kennel Club websites in a later article... they will help you locate reliable trainers.

If you cannot wait for the Kennel Club websites to appear here... just go over to Dog Agility Training where you can locate the web addresses!

Which are the most important secrets of Dog Training?

Secrets of Dog Training

There are so many answers to... 'which are the most important secrets of dog training'... that it is difficult to know where to start.

So many courses, training methods, books, and videos are available that it could cause general confusion to the new dog owner... let alone to the poor dog! My advice would be to obtain perhaps three 'courses'... read them, make notes, see where they agree and disagree. Ask questions. Here would be a good place to start. We could get a good round discussion going!

To summarise the essentials in a couple of words... those I would choose would have to be... kindness and consistency.
