Disabilities

For People...

Dogs can be taught to help people with disabilities... as in Seeing Dogs for the Blind, Hearing Dogs for the Deaf, and Dogs for the Disabled at The Francis Hay Centre; then again they can also be trained to help find people lost in the mountains, to sniff out drugs and explosives... there seems to be no end to the list of their abilities!

For Dogs...

Dogs themselves are sometimes smitten with disabilities, but as usual it is the dog who will manage to rise above whatever difficulties it is faced with!

With a dog which is deaf, it is YOU, the owner who must remember your dog is deaf... and think what this means. For example they can't hear you calling them, and they won't hear any approaching danger, like traffic. So you MUST think and plan to take this into consideration. Together you can learn hand signals and other ways of coping.

If blindness strikes it will take time for your dog to adjust... but it WILL. Always remember within your home to resist moving the furniture around... and take care when your dog is on unfamiliar ground.

Losing a limb... it is amazing to see how fast a dog learns to cope with the loss of one of its legs and it will soon be going around as fast as any of its four legged friends.
